Tree Service FAQs — Brooklyn, NY
These are the questions Brooklyn Tree Pros hears most from New York City homeowners and property managers about tree service — pricing, permits, timelines, and how the work actually goes. Short answers here; the linked service and cost pages go deeper. If your question isn't covered, call (347) 620-1227 and ask us directly.
How much does tree removal cost in NYC?
A small tree with open access might come down for $800–$1,500. A large backyard tree in Brooklyn — roped down in pieces, everything hauled through a narrow side yard — commonly runs $2,500–$6,000 or more, and crane-assisted removals price above that. Stump grinding is usually quoted separately. Every price is fixed in writing after a free assessment, and it includes hauling and cleanup.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in New York City?
For a tree entirely on your private property, usually no city permit is required — but there are exceptions for landmarked districts and some regulated lots, and street trees are NYC Parks property: removing or even pruning one without Parks authorization is illegal. We check your tree's status at assessment and handle any Parks permits for work that needs them.
Can you remove a tree that is hanging over my house or my neighbor's yard?
Yes — that is the standard Brooklyn removal, not the exception. Climbers and rigging lower every piece on ropes, and for trees too large, dead, or awkward to climb safely we bring in a crane and lift sections out whole. Your roof, fence, and your neighbor's yard are protected and left clean.
My tree looks sick. Does it have to come down?
Not always. Many declining trees respond to pruning, soil work, or targeted treatment, and some are simply stressed by drought or construction. Some, though, are structural risks that no treatment fixes. The free assessment gives you the tree's actual condition and the honest options — treatment, monitoring, or removal — with prices for each.
What happens with the stump and the wood?
Stump grinding takes the stump below grade so you can plant or pave over it; grinding is quoted as its own line so you can skip it if you prefer. Felled wood is hauled away by default. If you want firewood rounds left behind, say so before the job and we will cut and stack them instead.
Do you handle storm damage and emergencies?
Yes. Storm work starts with making the site safe — trees on roofs, split trunks, and hanging limbs first — and we document everything with photos, which your insurance claim will want. Call any time; the phone is answered by a person who can dispatch a crew, not a call center.
